General consensus of opinion doesn't exist. Opinions aren't facts, so consensus doesn't mean squat. You say that your small group of reviewers you trust agree that it's a great game. Good for you, you obviously picked the right reviewers to trust. So what are we gonna do about the fact that the small group of reviewers I trust does not think BOTW is GOTY? Are we wrong for not following the "consensus"? Are we just stupid contrarians who defy to see the fact that BOTW is the greatest game? Probably not, because different people have different priorities. So what do I care what the "consensus" is when the consensus does not share my own priorities? |

LMAO it does. Otherwise why even have a GotY. You engaging in the argument already means that you in some form believe in choosing a GotY, which means absolutely, without a doubt, that consensus matters. And that's what it actually is, a collection of opinions. There is an agreement of opinion that this game is GotY to them. Those are democratic principles.

It's actually twofold. I follow the ones I absolutely trust, and I follow what the general consensus (in this case aggregates) to see what the general opinion of the game is. And after that, I do what reviewers are supposed to make you do, which is deciding if I want to purchase the game or not. That is why A: reviewers are absolutely important and B: consensus matters because I can't trust just any one reviewer since in the end it is subjective what they think of the game. Ergo, aggregates help in what the general opinion of the game is.
Now when it comes to negativity to said game, I tend to A: Ignore them (if I know that they have a clear bias) and B: look at what they have to say compared to the overwhelming majority that is positive about the game. They then better have a damned good reason for their contrarian stance. And you know what, it's FINE to have your own opinion on BotW, but DO NOT presume that your opinion has to be trusted the same why you don't trust other reviewers. You have the freedom to say your opinion, but that doesn't mean your opinion is always right. Any opinion can be challenged and put up for debate.
