It probably isn't a copy of Nintendo's Miis but I wouldn't doubt that Nintendo discounted this approach already ...
For the most part systems like Playstation Home have existed since the mid 90's (in some form or another) and have failed ... Now, a large portion of this is probably because they're poor implementations but I think there are certain limitations to a system like this preventing it from being more popular.
