There are no systems as supported in the long term as Playstation consoles.
That is why they have legs, while consoles like the Wii dropped in sales like a car hitting a brick wall because it was basically abandoned in the transition to the Wii U.

Well it's also been a very long time since Nintendo had a successful traditional console (aside from Wii). The potential for longer console cycles was different back in the days of SNES, when 3D consoles started appearing on the market and would essentially force a 3D successor to SNES prematurely even if they wanted to stay with it for longer.
Today we have Sony and Microsoft releasing mid cycle console refresh systems, that could potentially prolong the generation. If Nintendo had been very successful with something like WiiU, I wouldn't rule out that we could have seen a longer than normal life cycle for that system. They treated the DS that way, which got replaced only after 6 years and 3 months.

Id like to know what is Nintendo's plan in the long term.
Most people here seem to agree that Nintendo will streamline their consoles to one, the Switch, after they drop the 3DS.
