I don't think it will fail. It will probably take second place easily for this generation. I just don't think it will hit the Wii numbers many are predicting. If the latter is failing for Nintendo or the fan base, then that would count.
The problem could lie, if the next gen starts in 2019 and we get a Switch 2 on top, technically ending Switch 1s sales.
