You sure SR2 wasn't the same thing? I'm pretty sure you'd get reset to the beginning of some area as well.

If the player could be set back to a hub area after a second death in in the "soul realm"  SR2, it never happened to me. Die once, collect souls and revive. The almost insane ease of the game was a noteworthy experience. I clearly remember discussing it with various people all the years ago.
