Luckily in game purchases wasn't really even a concept back then. Though nowadays Pokemon just gives rare pokemon and items through timed events, which is not ideal, but at least it doesn't cost extra.

To be fair Pokemons current events for rare Pokemon are much better than they used to be. Just need a wifi connection and to log on at the right time. I remember back when Mew originally released and you actually had to physically be at an event to get it. I was well jelly of my friends who were able to get Mews.

Yeah yeah, I remember that, and that event wasn't widely known either. It is better these days, but once those events are long passed people who missed out will be kinda screwed. It would have been better if you could just earn them in game (Unless you can do that already)
