Well, I was at an age where you suddenly don't want to associate yourself with 'kiddie' stuff anymore, and I decided that, even though I liked the game a lot, "Pokémon is for kids". And I stopped playing, never bought the second gen games, and stopped watching the anime and gave away all my trading cards. All pretty much over night. I started watching Dragonball Z instead, because that's what all the 'mature' kids were doing. It sucked though, but I kept watching because that's what I was 'supposed' to be watching and everyone else had already moved on and did the same.
There was once a very small window where I actually cared what other kids thought of me, and when I was vulnerable to peer pressure. Though I was never really pressured or bullied into doing anything, you're just dumb at a certain age, and Pokémon was sadly a victim of that.
It's probably too late now, and I could never get into it again. It remains a fond memory though.
