If you still have your CD key, you can download steam, make an account, and choose games-->activate a product (or something like that). Enter your Half Life CD key here, and you'll get access to the steam versions.
If it still doesn't run, right click on the game and choose properties. In the general tab, click on "set launch options" and add "-d3d" without the quotes, which forces it into direct3d mode (opengl is default). You also might even be able to do this without steam, by running or making a shortcut with the path to the .exe along with "-d3d".
