They fixed that part at least. Now you get warnings 6 hours in advance on the hour, every 15 minutes for the last hour.
But yeah it was pretty shitty before. I finished one of the endurance races and the servers turned out to be offline as they had screwed up their times and frigging date. Wednesday maintenance is on Tuesdays! Their times are still pretty weird with championship races starting at 25:00 and 25:10 :)
GT league will get me back. Online racing is great and all and certainly more exciting, but there's also so much waiting involved. It will be nice to just go from race to race again to rack up some money and xp while comparing leaderboards with my friends list. Grinding a million together for a car takes forever in sport mode! (Unfortunately the daily workout bonus cars have been giving me all duplicates lately, can't sell them either)
