People can deny a lot about themselves to conform to social norms. A woman I knew married a man who was clearly stereotypical homosexual and then was shocked years later when he admitted it and had to leave her and the community. As long as what we are doesn't hurt others we should aim for a tolerant society that avoids such self loathing and repression of identity.
