Yeah, it's really unfortunate
It seems like EA won't bother continuing an IP if it isn't bringing in millions. So they downsize the studio or make them work on another "bigger" IP. Due to poor quality that strategy often proves to bring in even less money (and more closures) and instead they should've just settled with the "small" but healthy profits they initially had.
This way EA would also receive goodwill from fans of that specific IP. Goodwill is important for long term growth. I know that EA isn't a charity but C&C 3: Tiberium Wars sold 1 mill in 2 months. That game was definitely profitable.
