Why would you assume that the USA cares anymore about Assad than they do about Crimea?
Syria and Assad's relevance historically stemmed from its strategic alliance with the Soviet Union, and later Russia (another warm-water port access in the area, just like Crimea). Outside of the human rights stuff (though I'm doubtful on how much of a factor that was here) the USA had no other major interest in seeing him dead, and it's looking like they're content with leaving him there, by now, as well.
