It is a definite shift... listen to "green hill zone"... pure classic. Next gen saturn, Sonic 3D blast's music was quite good, even if the game sucked. Sonic Jam had OK music. By Sonic Adventure 2, almost all the music was crap. City Escape "follow my rainbow" was memorable but not to good. Only good track imo was in the light chao garden :(
At least Super Mario Galaxy had about 50/50 memorable/throwaway music...
