Pretty much my impression. |
Just read some reviews that disagree though, apparently some text can be a little too small for comfort when playing undocked, it uses a dynamic resolution that can drop to sub-540p in handheld mode too. Would have to play it myself to decide, but from the reviews it seems docked is actually the way to go surprisingly.
Eurogamers impressions of the handheld version last month was pretty scathing. - "firstly, resolution is low - possibly very low. Doom was always soft but the Switch rendition is its blurriest presentation yet. We can't be entirely certain, but some areas of gameplay are blurrier than others, suggesting dynamic resolution scaling, adding to the blur factor are low resolution textures, which seem broadly equivalent to PC's lowest setting - and possibly even lower in places."
Gamespots review isn't much better and they actually recommend playing it docked - "It frequently shifts into lower gear, presenting not only low-res textures and models, but an overall muddied image that indicates dynamic resolution switching and stretching. If you can stand to look at a lesser version of Doom's once captivating world, you'll find that the game plays well enough on Switch so long as you've got a TV in front of you and a Pro Controller in hand."
