It sold 17 millions during its first year.

And we're talking about a system that ended up not meeting Nintendo's expectations in the last years.

So I don't see how the Switch who is undertracking the 3DS, can replace it alone. Nintendo never said it will, it always was an idea that fans got.

3DS seems to have sold 14M in its first year. Switch is tracking ahead by around 2M, and that's without having its price cut in about a third to sustain respectable sales. Even with the pricecut, 3DS barely keeps up with Switch's performance. Switch is probably making a lot more profit than 3DS did.
