I was joking about Vega inside. Apparently that was either photoshopped or was someone's name as part of an Intel employee promotion thing I guess? That's what I read anyway. There must be some type of agreement in place. Radeon getting it's own branding and now it's in Intel products? That was planned no doubt. AMD would probably want to tell everyone that Intel is using their GPU. It would be an easy way for AMD to direct customers to Ryzen based systems, considering it's competitive with Intel on performance and price now. Intel wouldn't want that, so AMD probably can't use that in advertising, just public statements maybe. By leaving AMD out of the marketing, and having AMD keep fairly quiet about it, Intel can continue to remain high end in those devices without losing too many customers. They will end up losing some though. The question is will they lose more or less than they would have anyway? Intel obviously thinks less. |
The main reason for all this was that Intel had a long term deal with Nvidia that allowed them to use their patents to develop their own graphics components, but that deal was expiring and Intel decided to look for someone else. And that someone else could only be AMD, as they are the only ones with enough tech patents to allow Intel to keep developing its own integrated graphic parts.
AMD creating the new Radeon group had nothing to do with that deal, and probably more about leaving the GPU guys do their work instead of forcing them to push GPGPU to improve their lackluster CPUs. Hopefully, that slip and new focus will come to fruiton with Navi if not the next arch.
What I don't know if Intel can only use just the patents to develop its iGPs or if they have access to AMD's architectures as well.
Please excuse my bad English.
