A trillion-dollar Standard Oil pushing fossil fuel into the 22nd century, and AT&T suffocating phone and internet services. It would likely be a less technologically advanced society as well, since there would be less innovative start-ups because of the fear of being copied or defeated by anti-competitive behaviour (something Google and Facebook, two companies which should have been broken-up already, are being accused of doing right now).

I remember arguing with someone very recently about the US being an oligarchy.  Honestly, if you need more evidence than the FTC turning their heads and whistling at monoplies in all media, SOPA passing after the 100th lobbyed attempt, and incomes >170k a year not being taxed for Social Security, you need your head looked at.
