It was widely accepted by Sanders supporters, but dismissed by Clinton supporters. This change confirms by people inside it happened, it's not a discussion or debate anymore.
It is deeply corrupt and unethical, but the laundering tactics used mean they knew if it came to light they'd be able to walk away without criminal charges. The single biggest threat to democracy is the corruptive influence of money, which has been legalized through Supreme Court decisions. At this point nothing short of amending the constitution could seem to hold off just how pervasive this issue is across every level of both major parties.
