Yep, take Hollow Knight for example, it was made by two people yet it looks better than the majority of 2D games out there, including those of Nintendo. And it doesn't lack in content either (50+ hours campaign).

Yeah that's a good example actually, still waiting for that Switch release, lol :P

I would say you are exaggerating a bit. There are quite good indie games, but they don't get even near AAA for me.

But sure the tools are there to close the gap and allow some indies to get to A and AA level.

Please tell me how I'm exaggerating, because I don't see how... it's rather simple to follow; There are some indie games out there that are more polished than some AAA titles, some that even surpass them. Notice I'm not saying all, so don't try to assume I mean all, I'm specifically saying some.

As for what I mean with the gap between indie and AAA getting smaller, look at Hellblade as an example, the developers themselves say it's not indie, it's not AAA, it's "indie AAA".

By the reason you didn't say "polish only" you were basically covering all aspects of the game. So no, when were are talking 20+M budget games I haven't seen any Indie that is really better all around than most AAA.
