Half a year in, Switch has two legitimate contenders for game of the generation. Wii U still doesn't have that...

Technically, it has Breath of the Wild :P

That's why I said two.

I thought the same thing.

What do you think would have happened with the WiiU if it had launched with Breath of the Wild.  Do any of you think that would have been a game changer? Enough of a spark to get word out about the console and for the people that did understand what it was to forgive the gamepad?

Probably not... Because the Wii U (as its name implies) was still targeting the Wii audience.  And Nintendo bungled the sequel to the two biggest Wii system sellers (Wii Sports Club/Wii Fit U).  And they really didn't have any good titles to make up for that for the Wii audience.  It may be the case that the Wii audience wouldn't have been interested either way, but Nintendo really didn't even make an effort to retain them.

Considering that, I don't think Zelda alone would have salvaged things.  They didn't have enough other stuff to go along with it.  But, suppose Breath of the Wild, Splatoon, and Mario Maker were all first year titles.  In that case, the Wii U could have been a modest success.
