I am a male and I tend to choose to play as a Male but I can in a second run pick the female. The only time I couldn't play a character was in Diablo 2, the Paladin, he was black and it took me out of the experience... a black paladin. I simply don´t relate as well to black characters not that I am completely unable to play as them --- but if I have a choice I won't.

Why though?

I simply don't relate as much to them... just seeing a black paladin I become less willing to play as him. I think its because they are black, I have black friends, I don't hate black people but I simply do not relate to them as I do towards white people especially in games. (when I don't have any personal relationship towards one of them)

I know what some might think but I ain't racist ... I am simply telling you the truth. If a flood happens in Africa I am less concerned then if it happened closer to home. I think that most people are like that, just look at the hurricanes in America and the attention that got compared to the floodings and hurricanes in Bangladesh.

In the end its all just preference, Like the choice of who to date... you decide based on several factors and even race might be one of them and that ain't a "wrong" thing to do.   Why would race not be a factor?
