VR as is, is going nowhere. 'Nobody' cares really. There'll need to a major innovation for it to take off, the removal of the brick on your head some way for example. I don't know what the "bright future" will be, but I'm afraid the future will become increasingly mobile, and there will be pushes towards it becoming subscription-based services.
