That is 100% the way to go for all games imo. 

Trackmania Turbo has that (excl the drafting) with upto 100 players online. You get a set amount of time to set the best time. It's also fun to watch the chaos. No contact drafting is pretty weird though, sail through the person in front of you who picks up your trail and thus keep changing position. Perhaps more effective than bump drafting. A lot safer at least.
