Turning the tide of public opinion within the US gaming industry isn't impossible which is what I was trying to show. It just takes really good strategy and marketing. Microsoft can do it if they really wanted to.

Are you sure that you're not experiencing some sort of Mandela effect about the 1990 survey in which Mario was found to be more recognizable than Mickey Mouse?

It's true that the Genesis was briefly ahead of SNES in the early 90s, but Sega was hardly some sort of cultural icon that surpassed Nintendo. I seriously doubt that Sonic was even close to Mario in popularity when Super Mario World alone sold more than all Sonic games on the Genesis combined.

You know what's weird? I've heard sites claim that the original Sonic the Hedgehog sold like 16 million units by itself. Which would make it almost as successful as Super Mario World and Super Mario Brohters 3. Obviously that probably isn't right ... but it's weird that some sites say wildly different things. I'm guessing they just combined the sales figures for all sonic games on the genesis and accidently said it was for one game.
