Adding in new resolutions is not the same thing for PC as it is for consoles. They don't necessarily need to create new assets (they might be, I don't know...but they don't need to) and they don't need to optimize it for existing hardware because very few if any setups are currently capable of running it. They just need to add in the feature knowing that as systems get better, they will eventually be able to run it. Future-proofing a game is not a bad thing.
