Nintendo have said it themselves. The Switch is a hybrid. They have admitted it is a replacement for the Wii u but not for the 3ds. However, they are not gonna let the 2 cannibalise each others' sales indefinitely.

So far the Switch seems to  have been marketed towards young adults/20+ and older. Seems like a departure from the family and child friendly Nintendo consoles from the past. The 1st party releases seem to back this up too. Blockbuster AAA home console on-the-go type titles. However, there is no way Nintendo is going to give up on a large part of its potential audience.

My prediction is simple. They will quietly drop the 3ds in late 2018 and then we will start to see more "handheld-like" game releases. Such as:- Mario and Luigi, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Paper Mario and..... Animal Crossing. Also it will be around the time that Pokemon lands on a "home" console for the first time. These 2 handheld behemoths will be among the first, sometime in 2019 to go after the handheld crowd who will be searching for something to  replace their 3ds's with. Of course, among that crowd will be children and family-orientated gamers. Slam dunk Nintendo! Get the hardcore on board first, then chase all the others once you have discontinued the 3ds. Now i know the 3ds is considerably cheaper but i believe part of Nintendo's strategy to catch all of the hanheld crowd too will coincide with either a price cut or a different/cheaper Switch Sku.

Just my opinion so please don't bash. (Too hard, anyway!)

Uf, you are wrong from start, Nintendo did not specifically said it's replacement just for Wii U, and its very obvious that Switch is platform that will replace Nintendo separate home console platfrom and seperate handheld platforms.

Focus and transition on Switch started long ago, if you look 3DS games, you will see that those games are mostly ports, remasters, spin offs and smaller projects, while all bigger projects are now for Switch.

Why Animal Crossing for Switch is most likly 2018. game!? They released last one 4 years ago so 5 years would fit perfectly with new one, they aiming to release Animal Crossing mobile game and they want to use it like marketing tool for main Animal Crossing game on console, with Switch they aiming to have few huge system seller games for each year so we definitely getting Animal Crossing or Pokemon next year and I think chances are higher for Animal Crossing.

There's also no way a Smash title isn't coming to Switch next year.

Seeing MK8DX and Splatoon1.5 and how they've performed this year, they'll almost certainly want to have either Smash4/Smash4.5 to try and keep those same sort of results for the system in 2018.

Personally i don't think Smash will be ready anytime soon. It may be held back until 2020 to give that year at least 1 big hitter!

Totaly disagree, I am actually most certain that Smash Bros 4DX/5 will be 2018. game from unannounced 2018. Nintendo games. Most possible hevi hitters for 2018. are Smash Bros 4DX/5, Animal Crossing (or maybe Pokemon), Retros game, Next Level Games game (Luigis Mansion 3 maybe).. For 2020. he have more than enuf time for other hevi hiters and other new games, Pokemon, Metroid Prime, 2D Mario/MarioMaker, new 3D/TopDown Zelda..

Then I was right that Nintendo has nothing against Sony in 2018. Thank you for the ammo.

You are not right, of course that Nintendo will have some heavy hitters for Switch in 2018. and Animal Crossing is actually one of most likely games.

.......ARE YOU ME!?!? I was literally about to make the exact same thread. My reasons for the prediction are different tho.

The Animal Crossing team in Nintendo is also the splatoon team. So based on recent release history, animal crossing should.be coming out in 2019.

Animal crossing new leaf- June 2013
Splatoon 1- may 2015
Splatoon 2- July 2017
Animal crossing- Mid 2019???
They will have splatoon 2 support throughout 2018 as well, so I doubt they will release the game then.

I heavily disagree on in being on the 3DS tho. Animal crossing' biggest audience is Japan, and they are absolutely gobbling up the switch.

You already got answer on your point, those games are developed buy Nintendo EPD thats big enuf that can handheld more than 2 games in same time, not to mention that Splatoon is made from lotsa new people in team and that Splatoon 2 reused lotsa things from Splatoon, also its posibilite that Animal Crossing started like Wii U project and that later was moved to Switch. In other words, we can easily have Animal Crossing game in 2018.
