Lootboxes took place way before Blizzard released Overwatch.

Every card game has a form of "lootbox" in ways of card packs because of the randomization of what cards you get.

Overwatch is definitely the most popular of their franchises that used a Lootbox system. But the "open something that is filled with randomness" took place way before Overwatch even in video games. I remember playing Valve's Team Fortress 2 with their crate system.

The Lootboxes in Overwatch aren't even that bad and you don't need to pay anything in real money for them...its mostly for skin unlocks and superficial things anyways. Much better than some games that hide weapons and other game altering things behind them.
