The NRA isn't a for-profit corporation though. It is a 501( c ) organization. Most of its power comes from the ratings it gives politicians which influence the voting decisions of gun owners. Republicans are scared of being primaried when they represent populations that could be 60-70% gun owners. As far as its status as a PAC, it is very low on the list in terms of money spent on ads. The defense contractors, big oil, teachers unions, and other organizations have much more money spent on ads.
Anyway it seems to me that if the politicians weren't scare of their voters voting them out, then what power would the people have over them to do what they say they'd do? They'd just all lie, do whatever they want, and get voted out the next term. Not as if they don't already lie anyway.
