The developers could have it so your aiming direction is locked with the right stick, or the aim is reset, and snapped to Cuphead's movement direction when jumping.

Another way of placing the jump button would be to have it where the change weapon currently is, as that is quicker to access, though it would likely be too obscure for the end user.
In that layout you would put the change weapon on the A button.

Needing to switch your thumbs almost instantly between pulling/pushing an analog stick and pressing a button an entire inch away when the current way is seamless is needlessly cluncky.

Until we can control games with our minds, clunky is at the core of gaming.
I am just trying to come up with ways to make it less so.
