I just kept landing on already bought property that I just gave up after going around the board once or twice. My family was disappointed that I gave up but what the fuck is the point if you are set up for failure from the start. I believe they just kept rolling for my character who probably ended up bankrupt after a few more times around the board. I'd rather play a game that requires more skill like Axis and Allies. |
Axis & Allies (unlike Monopoly) is still great game after 35+ years...problem is, even the shortest version (Axis & Allies 1941) can take forever (let alone combined A&A 1940 Europe and A&A 1940 Pacific)...I still play it sporadically, but it doesn't hit the table that often. As for skill, yeah it requires planning and situational awareness, but dice rolls can still make or ruin your day on occasion.
Anyway, my sincere advice to all interested in modern board games (meaning last 20-30 years) who don't know where to start - check some of Youtube channels like Shut Up & Sit Down, Dice Tower (especially their Top 10 lists) or Wil Wheaton's Tabletop series and after a while you'll see what sort of games you find intreresting (and board games are really, really diverse). Even better, if you can find some Boardgame cafe or club locally, it's a great place to try games before buying them.
Just, FFS, don't play Monopoly anymore.
