I'm on the Android side. There are different reasons for that:
- I'm a developer. To debug my games/apps on iOS I would have to buy a Mac, so I can only consider the iPhone if I buy a Mac. Not sure about that since I'm a happy Linux user right now.
- I like the variety of manufacturers. If Apple decides something stupid ("antennagate", "bendgate" or having to pay 1000 grand for an Amoled display and still get that weird thing on the top), you don't have other choice and has to buy what they want. Simply skipping a gen is not always feasible, like when you break your phone. If Samsung screws up, I can just buy a LG or Moto.
- Open standards, like USB-C. So, less overpriced adapters and accessories.
- More options. Want a cheap phone? You got it. Mid-end with 5000mah battery? Here you go. Expensive high-end? Budget-conscious flagship? I think you got the idea.
- Screen mirroring. I use that all the time to mirror my phone to the TV. I know Apple has Airplay, but I won't buy an Apple TV. It's useless for me with a smart TV, PS4 and phone. I know Chromecast could help me here, but I like that I can simply mirror the phone to any TV.
Of course, depending on each one these could not be important. Right now, I gave Samsung a shot after years of stock Android (Nexus and Moto) and I'm loving the S8. Their ROM is actually great now and the phone has tons of great features. The design is ridiculously gorgeous. I was never that worried about that, but this phone really looks like something from the future. They really knocked it out of the park this year.
