It's not exactly good seeing the hosts humiliated at their own tournament and I'm sure China wouldn't want that. Reduce them and less people can go, that means less money obviously, but more importantly for those of us that don't benefit financially from it... less fans get to enjoy being at the world cup which would totally suck! There's plenty of countries that don't really mind spending money to upgrade and expand their stadiums though, and ideally they should continue to be used for the club game after. Those bigger/better stadiums and hopefully a greater interest in football from the population should help their league be more profitable in the long term too. So making money from the world cup isn't entirely reflected in just how much they earn during the cup itself. |
I don't think the performance of China should have been that big of an issue. Japan never qualified for a World Cup before when they won the right to host. China's national team is also improving and is better than Qatar's right now.
