You can see it as a counter distinguisher because usually when something is reported in the news the skin color is only mentioned when it's not about caucasians. With saying "white men" they want to highlight that white men are just as able to commit crimes as any other ethnicity.

As a white male, do you really feel under attack and marginalized or generalized? Or do you just want to have a bite of the tasty victim cake other minorities are having?

Please tell me about that victim cake that I am having. As a minority I didn't know I was being marginalised or generalised.
