The Wii happened because of Nintendo's Blue Ocean target. They aimed to capture the casual gamers, and successfully did so
It is not fondly looked upon by many because of the motion control gimmick and weak power but it does have some great games.
I personally used the Wii to play more GameCube games, but it's still a good console, though I would say its library is weaker than compared to the GameCube or Wii U
