Also a pellet gun against a bear is such a ridiculous notion. As for coyotes, I would be risk-averse to rabies and if it was prepared to attack me I would not want a pellet gun. It's not about preventing them from rooting in your trash, it's about preventing them from harming you in other cirucumstances. 

But you just said, "I take it you never experienced a bear or coyote in your trash in the middle of nowhere."

Because that is how most people first encounter them. After that things escalate because they know there is food and keep coming around like a cat who you gave milk to.
