Sport, but even still there is a demand to kill things. I take it you never experienced a bear or coyote in your trash in the middle of nowhere. Tons of people in the U.S live in wilderness. A shotgun might be best against one animal, but a pack of animals would require something a bit more semi-automatic.

Seriously?  Coyotes and bears in your trash are valid reasons for the massive increase in AR15 style weapon sales?  A pellet gun is enough to stop them from rooting in your trash.  You don't need an assault rifle for that.  As for a pack, can you cite stories of someone saving themselves from a pack of animals using an AR15 style weapon?   I'd love to see the ratio of those killed with AR15 style rifles to the number saved from animal pack attacks.

Also a pellet gun against a bear is such a ridiculous notion. As for coyotes, I would be risk-averse to rabies and if it was prepared to attack me I would not want a pellet gun. It's not about preventing them from rooting in your trash, it's about preventing them from harming you in other cirucumstances.
