Really ? Did we just forget about the episode with X360 RROD, canned always online DRM with X1, Nintendo's previous online service, PSN hacking, paid online play, not to mention game patches and OS updates for consoles too ?
I'm not surprised when Windows is installed with over hundreds of millions machines with thousands of different hardware/software configurations ... I'd say Windows copes the best out of the bunch when other platforms don't even offer as many hardware peripherals or software ...
Most people don't hate Windows, if anything Linux or Mac is far more frustrating ... (consoles are closed and proprietary platforms that have their own problems too whether you like it or not) Nintendo partnering up with Nvidia doesn't help matters either when the most closed and locked down console manufacturer such as Nintendo only gets even more secrecy when Nvidia is supplying them and that's a huge blow to the emulation community since their open source drivers are full of bullshit which has almost no documentation about their hardware so emulating the Switch is a next to impossible task with Nvidia around ... |
I am more talking about the overall perceived experience, not the actual one.
I enjoy my time spent interfacing with my computers, even when things go wrong.
Consoles are like sugar, they provide people with a sweetness so enjoyable that they tend to forgive things like the Red Ring of Death or Nintendo's online infrastructure.
In this analogy we can place the PSN hack and such as weight gain from consuming too many calories.
Annoying, but they more or less enjoyed themselves getting there.
There will always be the one or two cases where thing go too far though.
Windows is seen as more of an inevitability, something they Must interface with to progress with their life.
Most enjoyment is overshadowed by the crushing amount of poor experiences they apply to Windows, such as editing rich text documents or spreadsheets.
People have simply not spent enough time with Linux or Mac to build up any real resentment for them, the honeymoon stage I guess.
I do still resent the closed nature of consoles, and gaming general.
But SuperTuxKart is not going cut it for me.
