This whole "controversy" if you can even call it is the crystalization and clash of two of the biggest, stupidest concepts in our country run rampant, both of which I can't stand - hyper nationalism vs hyper identity/racial politics. I'm just sitting on the sidelines laughing at both, because frankly I find both absurd and ridiculous. Let the idiots on both sides go at each other I say..
Luckilly for me, I never liked football anyway and have liked the NFL even less. The only reason I really watched was during a few year span I was in a fantasy football league with money on the line. But now that we've opted out of that, I have no reason to watch again. It's just a dumb and boring sport to me. This recent identity politics crap latching onto it only further validates my staying away from it.
I'll be busy enjoying my Cubs and Blackhawks playing winning baseball and hockey.
