Picture does get murky (haven't tried it in a month or two) but I always used wifi connection but that doesn't matter because my other streaming devices such as Roku and Wii U don't have this problem.  I believe it is more due to limited processing power of the Wii.  If he was a good son he would pick up one of the higher end Roku players for like 60-80 bucks and expose his dad to a true streaming device.
