China would intervene, but not to attack the U.S troops or protect Pyongyang. They'd take part of North Korea as a temporary buffer zone, and let Pyongyang fall.
Also the warning is just standard talk to keep up the pretenses. There are likely already secret agreements between Beijing and Washington for the event that North Korea's regime must be disposed of. This message is directed at North Korea just as much as anyone else. If China said that they wouldn't support North Korea, that would destabilize the current status-quo, which China is very much for maintaining.
