1.32 mil for a spin off on a handheld poorly suited to the game they wanted to make (no analogue stick, very weak graphically) is not bad at all.  And the GBA game was a dumpster fire with a metacritic 25 points bellow the series average on system that had no business attempting to have such a game.  Its sales are irrelevant and the fact you brought them up is silly.

Now I don't know about San Andreas or any of these other old ones, but GTAV on Switch would be easy money.  That game still sells well and a portable version that isn't badly gimped would be very exciting for a lot of people.  The reality is GTAV sells on whatever system it goes to and sells well.

At bold:

I think the main reason for that is GTA Online. If GTA V was sold on Switch without GTA Online I don't think the legs would be comparable to the other consoles and PC. If they want to go the GTA route why not start with GTA IV with all the expansions? At least that was all single player content, and it was pretty good too.

I'm not going to deny that plays a part but two things:

1) I believe a huge part of GTAV's appeal is goofing off in its huge open world, like most past GTA games, just on a bigger and better scale.  That would still be intact and now portable.

2) Seeing as how the Switch is getting an MMO, I don't see how GTA Online would be impossible.

And the reputation of GTA IV has decayed substantially since its launch.  A lort of that would do poorly if not be DoA.
