Fact is that doesnt relly matter, again, if you compare prices of Nintendo console compared to MS/Sony console from that time you will see that Nintendo consoles were always much cheaper in any case. PS2 launched at $299 while GC at $199, PS3 launch at $599 while Wii at $249, PS4 was launched at $400 while Wii U at $299 and Switch at $300. Again doesn't really matter, PS4 is less than 4 years on market, and its most popular and strongest console on market (3rd party games looks/works better than on other consoles), so having handheld at same price point at $300 would definitely be too much, and handheld with that price point would easily fail.

You would need to know that power is not what selling Nintendo systems, so $300 would be easily too much for just handheld despite power, only Switch handheld would easily failed with that price point without price cut, but Switch justify its $300 price because it's hybrid, its handheld but also home console in same time, and has two controller out of box for local multiplayer, so thats real value of Switch and one of main reasons why is selling great.

$300 is nothing for a shiney new electronics device these days.

This gen PS4 launched at $400 and Xbox $500. Switch the cheapest launch at $300.

Your definition of priced like a handheld needs to account for inflation and the power of the system. The Switch is a powerful portable and it's priced as such.

My whole argument is that switch is selling so well in japan because it's firstly a portable. The fact its got a big screen mode is secondary. But because it's also a home console that actually means ths portable should be selling better then past handhelds because unlike them it's got the additional feature of a home console.

If 3DS had a home console mode you'd expect it's sales to be even higher.

You are wrong, it is for only handheld console when you have pretty good phones or tablets for $150.

Wii U launch just year earlier before PS4/XB1 with $300 price point. Switch has same launch price like Wii U, $50 higher price point than Wii and $100 higher than GC.

Even with included inflation $300 would be too much for handheld in any case (again, 3DS needed price cut to $170 in order to start selling, PS4 is $300 and its less than 4 years on market, and its most popular and strongest console on market, 3rd party games looks/works better than on other consoles), despite fact that Switch is strong for handheld, still would be too much for only handheld, power is not what is selling Nintendo hardware, and definatly not reason why Switch is selling or why 3DS were selling or why Vita didnt sell.

Switch is selling good on first place in Japan beacuse its partily handheld and we all know that Japan loves handhelds, but thats not only reason why is selling so good and why is so much popular, full home console mode, tabletop mode, local multiplayer even in portable mode, and two Joy Cons for local multiplayer out of box, give to Switch much bigger value than Switch would have its just a $300 handheld, and same goes for sales. So Switch would have much worse sales that it is now if its just a handheld, even in Japan, beacuse it would have much worse value for $300 price point than it has curently, Switch like hybrid device with two controllers out of box for local multiplayer have pretty good value for its price point and thats reason why has so good sales.

If 3DS had home console mode and two controllers for local multiplayer out of box, and had around $100 higher price point, I wouldn't so sure that would have better sales than it had now. I am pretty sure that only handheld Switch for around $100 lower price point than current Switch version will be more popular than current version of Switch in Japan.
