I still think Shovel Knight has one of the best continue systems for platformers ever.
The way you loose your loot with a chance to recover it once and also gives you the ability to sacrifice checkpoints for more loot forces you to make interesting decisions.
Especially since you use the loot for upgrading your armor, spells and gear, wich is neccessary to be able to complete some of levels.
It never feels tedious, because it's all based on decisions you made earlier, but it can be pretty devastating.
