When you live your life hoping you're not in the wrong place at the wrong time, are at the mercy of the majority because there are way less of your skin color around, and are possibly discriminated against(housing, workforce and even dining) on a daily basis, you too might develop some hypervigilance for people skirting the line with these kinds of jokes.

I thought you were talking about the police till the very end of the comment, lol. 

It can apply to police.  It's a stressful job.  Except for the discriminating part, it all applies, at least until they take off the uniform at the end of the night.
