It was annouced before that they were aiming at an end 2005 release but yeah a few delays.
An interesting fact, Fishie a personal Belgian Friend who is also a freenlancer (and a vgchartz member for a short time) was one of the few people who played the PS3 early and his report made it basically on every site:
An industry insider who goes by the name Fishie (how very appropriate) says that he got some hands-on time with Playstation 3 games in Japan and wasn’t too happy with what he saw.

Another fun fact, after his report he wasn't welcome at sony for years but the PS4 team invited him again and he was more postive this time and now works for sony Benelux.
