Get everyone in Sansa's life killed so he could manipulate her more easily when she is by herself? But no one ever had to point out to her that she shouldn't trust Littlefinger. She was always the first one to acknowledge that. And he should know that she doesn't trust him, and never will after what he did to someone else he claimed to love.

It seemed like his ambitions were far higher than just Sansa previously.

That's how his story ends?
Begging for his life after failing to get rid of one Stark girl, when his ambitions seemed much more grandiouse before.

That said, the way he died still felt satisfying in some ways. But rushed, and not due to the circumstances I would have expected of someone with his ambitions.
For all his talk of climbing the ladder of chaos, he was stuck at the lower steps aiming for Sansa.

Varys on Petyr:

"he would see this country burn if he could be king of the ashes"

Petyr to Sansa:

"Every time I’m faced with a decision, I close my eyes and see the same picture. Whenever I consider an action, I ask myself will this action help to make this picture a reality? Pull it out of my mind and into the world? And I only act if the answer is yes. A picture of me on the Iron Throne… and you by my side."

In what world him being Sansa's bitch for the entire time would've gotten him to the iron throne? All his actions pointed to his death by the end of the season.

He loved Catelyn very much but it never stopped him from being one of the smartest and most ruthless characters on the show. Petyr was assassinated long ago. So was Varys. The spider is lurking around waiting for his death scene to happen sometime next year.
