I think people like what they like when it comes to RPG's,I was recently chatting with a friend about the genre and though he enjoys them, he said he doesn't consider JRPG's to be true RPG's like the latest western releases, where you can change your character's appearance and make the game that much more personal to you, he also said that the open world gameplay adds to rather than subtracts from the experience. I could see where he was coming from, but actually I have often found that the scope of WRPG's in what they set out to achieve leaves the games sometimes fundamentally broken out of the box and it could be several patches before their even remotely playable. In my experience with WRPG's I have encountered all manner of glitches, bugs and poor performances, and it can sometimes be a chore to continue playing them. I rarely if ever have these problems playing Japanese RPG's.
I cans ee what you mean about turn based vs action, I like both myself but have developed more of a taste for Action RPG's in the wake of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XII.
I think a big reason there was a change in the HD era was the Xbox 360 and the overall decline of the Japanese home console market in terms of it's buying influence. Japanese devs had to learn fast that the times had changed and not all of them made it, especially ones who got duped into making their games exclusive to the 360 which brought with it the arrival of true shooter domination. The good thing about having Sony or even Nintendo on top in a generation is their desire to bring variety to the table, and if that means 10 games selling at 750k-1.5m that's fine, a good day at the office even, where as when the 360 was effectively leading the industry the attitude was about heavy sales from Microsoft which is why they cancelled Cry On from mistwalker for example, where as had the games B;u Dragon and Lost Odyssey been released on the PS3 they would been happy with the sales and continued on with Cry On.
