Okay, a further contribution from myself on this thread.
I think the industry prefers it when Sony is on top, my reasoning for that is the relationship Sony has with it's third party content providers. Sony has always tried to provide the olive branch that Nintendo didn't during the NES and SNES days, and the industry from what I can determine doesn't seem fond of the idea of working closely with Microsoft for whatever reason, whenever they buy studios the talent leaves (Rare is a big example there) before actually sitting down to do work with the company, and if Microsoft does end up buying you watch out, the initial celebration is cut short by the sudden appearance of a clock counting down on your company'team's days in the industry. I can imagine the Japanese side of the industry must really love it when the Playstation brand reigns over the industry, as third parties really dislike Nintendo and their no exception obviously, so it must be beneficial to them to have a company that speaks their language and has an understanding of their primary market at the top.
Japanese games seem to be on the up this generation in the wake of renewed success at Sony for instance.
