What was the last new gaming franchise you tried and why?

Disgaea 5. Jumped into the series with this title, since I heard the story doesn't really link across games, and it seemed like a good Switch title to get.

I played about five hours...and while I never really felt lost in the story (I liked the unique tone), I felt like the game decided to throw a ton of mechanics at me very quickly, and I keep struggling to finish fights efficiently. I suppose this gets better as time goes on...but my initial impressions are that this wouldn't be as big a problem if I was more familiar with the franchise.

Not really into it enough to try out older titles...but I'd like to keep pushing to finish this one. We'll see.
