The story is a huge part of the game, lots of detail, and many characters stretching across 7 games now. I would say you could still enjoy it even it's your first Yakuza however. Another thing to consider: Every Yakuza game has a feature that allows the player to recap prior events and story elements. It's called the reminsce mode. I started with Yakuza 3, and fell in love with it. If you have the time/inclination, maybe play the others first. Part 7 of 7 probably isn't the best place to start, but you'll be fine if you do.
